Types of blood tests
The most common type of blood test is known as a ‘Venous Blood Test’, whereby a sample of your blood will be taken from a vein in your arm – usually using a needle and syringe. This type of test requires little preparation and is generally painless. Other blood tests may include an arterial puncture, whereby an artery in your wrist or ankle is punctured to take a sample or capillary punctures, where tiny drops of your blood are taken from the skin with lancets or needles.
Before having any clinical examination, you must ensure that you have been appropriately assessed by your GP first; this will help ensure that only necessary investigations are carried out.
Getting the most out of a blood test
For any test results to be accurate, you mustn’t consume alcohol for at least 24 hours before your appointment – this can alter some hormone levels, interfering with results and giving inaccurate readings. Furthermore, fasting for 12 hours before taking certain types of blood tests can also improve accuracy; again, this should be discussed with your doctor beforehand, who will advise on exactly what preparation needs to take place depending on what type of test you’re having done. Overall, undergoing regular blood tests at least once every year (or whenever recommended by your doctor) is essential in helping maintain good health and catching any potentially dangerous medical conditions early on – so make sure you arrange yours today!
